National Army Museum

The main collection includes a few pieces of passing interest, a rather gaudy shamsher presented by Maharaja Ranjit Singh to General Hudson and a few medals. The reading rooms however contain the real treasure.

The National Army Museum is a charity and specialises in the pre WW1 period, consequently it preserves material related to the Sikh Wars and the ongoing relationship between the Sikhs in the British Army up to the Fist World War. The reading rooms, contain numerous accounts, letters, maps, and documents relating to the Anglo Sikh Wars, including the original battle maps, and letters written (by the British) from the line.

The photograph collection is unrivalled, and sorted by regiment. Reading room tickets must be acquired in advance.

Opening Hours
Every day 10am-5.30pm. Admission Free
Closed 1 January, Good Friday, Early May Bank Holiday, 24-26 December.

Reading Room (Research)
The Reading Room is open to ticket holders from Tuesday to Saturday inclusive, from 10am to 4.30pm (except for the Saturdays of Bank Holiday weekends, the last two full weeks of October, when we are closed for stocktaking, and the period between Christmas and New Year).

How To Get There
Tube - District or Circle Line to Sloane Square. Walk along King's Road, left down Smith Street. Approximate time 10 minutes.
Bus - No’s 11, 19 and 22 along King's Road to Smith Street.
No. 137 to Pimlico Road, walk along Royal Hospital Road.
No 239 (Mon-Sat) stops outside the Museum.
